"Perilous" starts out innocently enough: a 15-year-old meets a group of friends at the shopping mall for the birthday of one of the girls. They browse the shops and then sit down to have a pizza together. Later, they wait outside the mall for the mother of one of them to pick them up.So far, so mundane.
But then, the mother they are waiting for does not arrive; all the customers and staff leave the mall, darkness descends, no security guards are to be seen, and while the girls are still unsure about what to do next (strangely enough, not one of them have their mobile phones on them - the only thing I found a bit difficult to believe, especially since earlier, the other girls ring one from the group to remind her about their appointment), a dark van pulls up at one of the security doors to the mall, and the girls - well concealed in the darkness and keeping quiet - witness what very obviously is a robbery.
From then on, things happen very fast: They try to call the police from a payphone while one of them is supposed to keep watch; the watch is spotted, and next thing they know, all four girls find themselves kidnapped in the back of the van.
An action-packed, fast-paced story unfolds, with the girls escaping, being captured again, escaping again, finding unexpected help, but also finding unexpected traps along the way, until the girls (and the reader) can not be sure whom to trust anymore.
One of them is killed, one of them ends up pregnant, one of them apparently sees the entire thing as one big adventure, and one of them finds out something about her father that sets her entire world upside down.
I am not going to tell you more about "Perilous" - you should really find out for yourself, if I managed to capture your interest.

Perilous Tamara Hart Heiner 9780979607080 Books Reviews
A well written book about four girls who were kidnapped after a robbery at a jewelry store at a mall. The girls were taken from Idaho into Canada. One of the girls was shot and killed when she tried to escape. A few days later, the other three girls were able to escape, and started walking back to the United States. After about two months of trying to get home, a family helped them get to safety. The man in this family worked with the FBI.
I think this reads a bit like Iris Johansen for teen girls. It has that same feel, but without the delightful cursing and sex scenes. Intrigue, corruption, murder, rape, all there.. but muted and subdued in a way that would not offend parents. Starts with a murder, backtracks into the kidnapping of 4 girls, and holds interest into the end.
At first I thought, "Puh-leez, how am I supposed to believe these kids were surviving in the wilderness", but honestly, they barely did, so it increased the realism. There was at least one point that was ridiculously unbelievable; but sometimes fiction asks that you suspend belief. Kismet, maybe.
All in all, good read, especially since it was FREEEEE! )
There was nothing.... spectacular about this book.
The plot was interesting but could of been executed better.
The characters.... well i suppose they were realistic version of young teenagers but i just couldnt seem to find myself caring about them. The detective had the most boring life ever, poor thing. Plus there's no way in hell he'd be allowed to tell his significant other such top secret information.
The writing..... well it wasnt bad, but neither was it great.
Just everything about this book was slightly off kilter. Shame cause it could of been great.
so im rating this book 2.5 stars. unfortunately i dont think i'll be reading many books from this author in the future.
I read Priceless a while back and wanted to catch up with what Jaci went through in the first book. This book is exciting and suspenseful without being graphic about the violence. I thought something had been left out as I read, but along the way, I realized that the main character had blocked out some of the things that happened to her. It was a very natural way to explain it all. The slower parts weren't too slow, but they served to give me a breather before the action ratcheted up again. I'll be buying the second book in the series, Altercation.
The group that praised Christopher Paolini's dragon-based world will be equally enchanted to read THH's Perilous. This was my first fiction e-book, and I traversed it in two evenings. The ebook was very well created, though the dates mid chapter got lost in the text, which may have contributed to some confusion I had about events that were presented out of order.
Like many other raters here,I had some moderate issues with credibility, loose ends, and the importance of nationalities. Will it bother the YA audience that it was intended for? Probably not. Will it bother adult readers? I think the comments speak for themselves.
The house-cleaning scene is one of the most far-fetched, and I couldn't see what it did for the plot except for moving the girls around. But a younger audience might respond to toiling kidnapped girls.
I read this book after seeing excerpts from books 2 and 3, so I had some spoilers to prepare me for loose ends. I read a lot of YA fiction, and thought that this book did a good job of keeping the reader guessing and trying to figure out which adults could be trusted by the kids through a high adventure style.
I think the under-15 crowd (and THH's many fans) will really enjoy her debut novel.
Wow. A great read. Four young girls shopping the mall, one mom to pick them up at closing time. She doesn't show and the girls are hidden in the shadows. A van backs up to the jewelry store and break in. Amanda goes to keep an eye on them while the others go to the payphone. A noise and the robbers come out and captures all four. They are bounced around in the back till they stop for a peek break. Sallie runs to escape and is shot in the head. The three girl are put back into the van and driven to the boss's headquarters in Canada. The perils of the girls eventual escape is scary...
